> – Satisfied Patient
Negative Feedback
Unfortunately, not all reviews are glowing. Several patients report significant issues with administrative processes and billing, as well as unsatisfactory interactions with Dr. Kohatsu:
– Billing Issues: Multiple patients report being incorrectly billed for services, facing challenges with insurance claims, and receiving little assistance from office management to resolve these issues. One patient even faced the threat of collections due to billing errors.
– Communication and Sensitivity: Some patients felt that Dr. Kohatsu did not engage in adequate dialogue, failed to review charts before appointments, and did not practice trauma-informed care—an important consideration in women’s health.
– Prescription Management: There are accounts of prescription mismanagement, with patients needing to follow up repeatedly to ensure refills are processed.
– Wait Times and Customer Service: Several reviews cite long wait times (over an hour) and disrespectful or unhelpful interactions with front office staff.
> “I received multiple invoices for an appointment paid for in person in the office, but I’m now being threatened to be sent to collections by Labcorp for north of $600 for three separate tests!”
> – Dissatisfied Patient
> “She does not go through verbal consent or even give a knee touch before placing the speculum directly inside you. This is just awful practice, especially for a doctor who will frequently work with victims of sexual trauma.”
> – Concerned Patient

Final Verdict
Poway Women’s Care provides a range of services for women in San Diego’s Rancho Bernardo area, blending gynecological care with cosmetic offerings. While many patients have had positive experiences—especially with certain staff members and cosmetic procedures—the clinic’s reputation is marred by administrative and billing issues, as well as concerns over the interpersonal approach of at least one practitioner.
If you are considering Poway Women’s Care, weigh the positive reviews against the negative accounts, especially regarding sensitive care needs and financial transparency. For those seeking specialized, trauma-informed, or LGBTQIA+ inclusive care, it may be worth consulting with the office beforehand or exploring other local options.

8 Reviews on “Poway Women's Care – San Diego, Rancho Bernardo: An In-Depth Review”
Had a cool sculpting treatment done Vicky was superb!!! She explained the process and walked me through everything…She is such a sweet soul and you can tell she loves the patients…I will be back…
I have been a patient of both Karen Kohatsu and Deana Buan for about 4 years. Both have been amazing, along with other members of their staff. Kohatsu also preformed my salpingectomy surgery, which I have no complaints about.
I came here for years but will not be returning – when I was last in their office for a routine woman’s wellness exam (something 100% covered by insurance!) they messed up the billing and won’t fix it. Not only did I get multiple invoices from them for an appointment paid for in person in the office, but I’m now being threatened to be sent to collections by Labcorp for north of $600 for three separate tests!
While initially they told me they would resubmit the codes to insurance and that it was a system error when they changed to a new system, now they’re telling me I have to settle it with Labcorp myself.
How can I? I don’t know what the services were!
When I’ve called back yet again to find out how this will be resolved, the office manager simply refuses to take my calls. Appalling service. Don’t go here if you value your credit.
I’ve been coming here for three years for routine exams. The first time I had a neutral experience but the second two times were awful. Dr. Kohatsu is more concerned about my partner’s sexual satisfaction over my own health, she does not engage in a dialog with her patients, she did not even look at my chart before coming in, and mistakes the reason for my visit. I’ve been billed $60+ for ridiculous things such as “birth control consultation” during my yearly exam where she asked me to discontinue my BC to rule out symptoms. They have messed up my prescriptions by canceling them even though I recently had a visit. Instead I have to constantly check if I have enough of my prescription and call them several times a year to remind them to fill it. The support staff has always been incredibly kind, that’s why I gave two stars instead of one. Despite that my last two interactions with Dr Kohatsu left a bad taste in my mouth, my interactions were not trauma informed or lgbtqia+ friendly. For one example she does not go through verbal consent or even give a knee touch before placing the speculum directly inside you. This is just awful practice, especially for a doctor who will frequently work with victims of sexual trauma. I’ve tried to voice my concerns but it seems the only thing I have left to resort to is google plus finding a better ob/gyn.
I needed a very simple change to my birth control prescription and it was a horrible experience getting anyone to help or follow through. After my insurance company called twice, I called twice and was rudely spoken to, I just made an appointment with my GP and had it taken care of that same day. I think they have shifted the focus to Botox and fillers and are annoyed with the gyn patients. That’s the feeling I get.
Such a great experience at Poway Women’s. Deana is so supportive and helpful.
I have been a patient here on and off for several years. The reason I give them 1 star is the customer service. I have had several appointments where they have had me waiting in a room for over an hour. I received an apology and understood the first time. The second and third time was a bit much. My most recent experience was with the customer service over the phone. There was a misunderstanding with a lab order and I am in the medical field and last I checked you needed a doctor’s signature for blood work. Apparently I was wrong? However instead of informing I was mistaken I was treated with the utmost disrespect from 3 different employees. Heads-up find a place that wants to keep their customers and is will to help not criticize. And function on time.
This is an awesome healthcare facility. Everyone I have encountered here is caring, kind, and professional. I don’t want to go anywhere else for my women’s healthcare!
